First and foremost, make sure you have Java 1.8.0 or later installed. It
can be downloaded
here
(you probably want the JRE).
You will also need libpcap installed to be able to capture the network
traffic. Linux users should install the appropriate package for their
distribution. Windows users will need to download winpcap from
here.
Once you have both java and libpcap (or winpcap) installed, grab the item
collector itself is about 1.0MB.
Uncompress the archive and run either run.bat (Windows) then the item collector should start. Please note that the item collector
must be run as root on Linux for it to be able to sniff the network traffic. When you zone it should start picking up items.
To set the name you submit items as, edit the run.bat and
change 'Yourname' to the name you wish to submit items as.
If you get an error such as:
'PacketCapture: loading native library jpcap.. Exception in thread "main" java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: jpcap.dll: Can't load IA 32-bit .dll on a AMD 64-bit platform' use 32 bit java instead. Note if you use runfindjava.bat it should find and collect for you.
If you are not finding any items you have the wrong interface collecting so change the device= line in the bat file to the other interface. so using the example below to collect on Device = 1 I would put:
device={83A6BB87-1A09-4D35-AA33-0D34D3E4E930}
Note the device number will differ system from system.
This is what it should look like when you start the item collector.
Devices[0] = '{2FBEEAFF-8914-44E9-B065-1AA9AFBADB54}'
Devices[1] = '{83A6BB87-1A09-4D35-AA33-0D34D3E4E930}'
